Republican Governor Mark Sanford is prepared to fight his own state’s legislature to refuse a portion of money from the $787 Billion Stimulus fund designated for South Carolina. Here.
Sanford argues that taking the money would only put his state further in debt when the funds run out in two years.
A few other Republican governors, including Louisiana’s Bobby Jindal, have threatened to refuse money that would require the states to fund or expand programs and then leave states holding the bill once the stimulus money runs out.
Update- Texas Governor Rick Perry joins in rejecting funds to the tune of $555 million. Details here.
